Guilford County
Sheriff's Department
4. Narrative:
RODNEY LARMART WOODBERRY B/M DOB 11-05-62 GAVE AGENT PENDERGRASS AND
THIS WRITER A STATEMENT ON 30MAY96 AT 1740 HRS. AT THE GUILFORD
COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, MAJOR CRIMES SECTION. WOODBERRY GAVE AN ORAL STATEMENT AND MOST OF THE MAIN POINTS WILL FOLLOW. HE WAS NOT ASKED TO SIGN A WRITTEN STATMENT. HE STATED THAT HE WORKED SEVERAL MONTHS FOR TED KIMBLE AND THAT HE HAD LEFT AROUND THE LAST WEEK OF AUGUST OR THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER 1995. HIS REASON FOR LEAVING WAS THAT HE DID NOT GET ALONG WITH TEDS FATHER RONNIE KIMBEL SR.A VERY WELL AND HE WANTED TO MOVE TO BURLINGTON BECAUSE OF BEVERLY JEFFERS. RODNEY STATED THAT HE THOUGHT A LOT OF PATRICIA AND THAT SHEB WAS ALWAYS VERY NICE TO HIM AND THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW ANYONE WHO DIDN'T LIKE HER OR HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST HER. RODNEY SAID THAT HE HAD BEEN TO TEDS HOUSE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO WORK FOR TED AND THAT HE HAS ALSO BEEN IN THEIR HOUSE AND HAD WENT AS FAR AS THE BATHROOM IN THE HALLWAYC TO WASH HIS HANDS AND EAT A LUNCH OF HAMBURGERS THAT PATRICIA HAD PREPAIRED.
HE SAID THAT MR
KIMBLE, TEDS FATHER SOLD TEE-SHIRTS AND CAPS AT LYLES TO EARN EXTRA
MONEY AND THAT MR KIMBLE HAD MENTIONED TO HIM THAT IF THE PEOPLE IN
HIS CHURCH KNEW THIS THAT THEY WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND HIM SELL THESE
THINGS AND THATS WHY HE DID IT AT LYLES.E
HE ALSO SAID
THAT ON ONE OCCASION THAT HE GAVE A PERSON A BAG OF PATATO CHIPS
FROM MR KIMBLES SNACK BOX AND FORGOT TO PAY FOR SAME AND MR KIMBLE
GOT ONTO HIM AND TOLD HIM THAT IT WAS THE SAME AS STEALING.F
I ASKED RODNEY
IF ANYONE HAD CONFIDED IN HIM ABOUT ANYTHING DEALING WITH PATRICIAS
MURDER AND HE SAID, "NO". I ASKED HIM IF TED HAD ASKED HIM TO DO
ANYTHING THAT WAS AGAINST THE LAW AND HE SAID, "NO". HE DID REFER TO
THE INCIDENT OF ROBERT TIDWELL GOING TO CIRCUIT CITY WHEN TED HAD
GIVEN HIM A SUM OF MONEY TO PICK UP MERCHANDISE FROM AN EMPLOYEE
THAT WORKEDG
THERE AND APPARENTLY THE EMPLOYEE WAS STEALING THE MERCHANDISE AND
THAT TIDWELL HAD BEEN RIPPED OF AND DID NOT RETURN WITH ANYTHING. I ASKED HIM IF TED HAD SAID ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE HIM THINK THAT TED WAS INVOLVED IN PATRICIAS MURDER AND HE ANSWERED, "YES".H HE SAID THAT HE THOUGHT TED KNEW SOMETHING ABOUT PATRICIAS DEATH BECAUSE OF TED ACTIONS AFTER THE MURDER. HE SAID THAT TED HAD COME TO HIS MOTHERS HOUSE ON A NEW MOTORCYCLE SHORTLY AFTER PATRICIAS DEATH AND WANTED TO 276 ADad didn't trust Rodney. We believe Rodney was saleing lumber on the side, when we weren't looking. I was about to fire Rodney when he quiet. I was on vacation and was planning to let Rodney go when I returned, but he no-showed on my Dad. *BThat's a lie. Patricia didn't like Rodney nor Rodnery her. CRodney's been all through my house. He helped me paint one room. DI don't recall if he ever gave me the key back. EEveryone knows my Dad sales caps & tee's. FWe have it on film. A friend of Rodney's came in and was pricing lumber. I had to run down the street. Rodney's friend picked a bag of chips up and ask how much they cost. Rodney said 50¢. The guy throws them back. They talk for a minute. Rodney walks over and picks the chips up and gives them to the guy. GThe stranger claimed it was legal and I would get a recept. I gave Robert $700 and told him, "no recept, "no money." "Don't give the money to this guy. Pay for it yourself! HHe didn't state this on the first interview and he signed a statement for us. 231
SHOW IT TO RODNEY AND
TOLD HIS MOTHER THAT HE WANTED RODNEY TO RIDE THE MOTORCYCLE AND SEE
HOW HE LIKED IT, KNOWING RODNEY DID NOT DRIVE OR RIDE MOTORCYCLES.A
HE ALSO THOUGHT IT VERY STRANGE THAT TED DID NOT SHOW ANY REMORSE OR
SADNESS BECAUSE OF PATRICIAS DEATH AND STATED THAT HIS MOTHER TOLD
HIM THAT NO ONE WOULD EVER KNOW THAT HIS WIFE HAD JUST BEEN MURDERED
BY THE WAY TED ACTED AND HE AND HIS FAMILY THOUGHT THIS TO BE VERY
STRANGE BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A NORMAL WAS FOR ANYONE TO ACT IN THIER
OPINION.
I ASKED HIM WHEN WAS
THE LAST TIME HE SPOKE WITH TED AND HE STATED THAT HE WENT BY LYLES
IN JANUARY, THAT BEVERLY HAD TOOK HIM BY THERE AND THAT HE JUST
WANTED TO SEE TED AND TALK TO HIM AND SEE HOW HE WAS DOING.B
WHILE THERE AND IN A CONVERSATION HE ASKED TED HOW HE WAS DOING
SINCE PATRICIAS DEATH AND IN HIS REPLY TED SAID, "WELL, AT LEAST
SHE'S OUT OF HER MISERY". AND AGAIN RODNEY THOUGHT THIS WAS A
STRANGE THING FOR TED TO SAY ABOUT HIS WIFE, A PERSON THAT TED SAID
HE LOVED SO MUCH AND HE DIDN'T SAY WHAT MISERY.
AGAIN I ASKED RODNEY
IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ELSE TED HAD SAID BEFORE PATRICIA DEATH THAT
WOULD RELATE TO HER DEATH AND HE SAID THAT ONCE LAST SUMMER TED WAS
UPSET AT PATRICIA OVER A PAIR OF TENNIS SHOES HE HAD BOUGHT FOR
$25.00 AND HAD NOT TOLD PATRICIA HE HAD SPENT THE MONEY AND HE TOLD
RODNEY THAT HE WISHED THAT HE HAD NOT EVER GOTTEN MARRIED. TED ALSO
MADE THE STATEMENT THAT WHEN YOU'RE MARRIED AND SEPERATE THAT THE
WIFE CAN GET ONE HALF OF EVERTHING AND WAS UPSET ABOUT IT. RODNEY
ALSO SAID THAT TED HAD ASKED HIM LAST SUMMER IF HE WOULDN'T LIKE TO
HAVE A_ BUNCH OF MONEY BUT DID NOT RELATE TO WHAT FOR. BUT ON THE
NEXT DAY DURING AND INTERVIEW AT THE SBI OFFICE RODNEY SAID THAT TED
HAD TOLD HIM THAT HE WISHED HE HAD A HIT MAN AND RODNEY SAID THAT HE
HAD FORGOTTEN TO TELL ME ABOUT IT ON THURSDAY THE 30TH. DURING THIS
TIME LATE LAST SUMMER OR DURING AUGUST RODNEY SAID THAT TED TOLD HIM
THAT HE WISHED PATRICIA WAS DEAD.
I ASKED RODNEY IF HE
WOULD BE WILLING TO TAKE A POLYGRAPH TESTC
AT THE SBI OFFICE THE NEXT DAY 31MAY96 AND HE SAID THAT HE WOULD BE
WILLING TO AND THAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO WORK UNTIL 1200 O'CLOCK BUT
THAT HE WOULD COME TO GREENSBORO AND TAKE THE TEST.
5. Reporting
Officer/Assignment: DET. J.D. CHURCH AI went by wanting my money and to find where Rodney was living to send my detective to get a signed statement. I said nothing of Rodney riding my bike! I wasn't even there 5 minutes. BThis is another lie. He came by to get money out of me ($80). This happened after he called me the first time. See p 275(e) Note Rodney claimed on p275 one month ago and on this page he claimed January. He got scared after the first time they spoke to him and he came running to me. Months after he came by and seen me. He made a while phone call seen in the following statement p. 278. I've never seen Rodney scense January. CRodny says he has beaten the machine before. During the visit in January Rodney stated he would do what he had to, to cover himself.
