Report, J. D. Church (GCSD):  Interview, Gary Lyles

Guilford County Sheriff's Department
Supplemental Report

1. Incident Number: 951009027
2. Victim's Name: PATRICIA GAIL KIMBLE
3. Day/Date/Time of Report: Wed Jun 12 10:17:06 EDT 1996

4. Narrative: ON 11JUNE96 AFTERNOON I SPOKE WITH GARY LYLES AT MY OFFICE WHERE HE CAME BY TO SPEAK WITH ME. I TOLD GARY THAT I REALIZED THAT HE HAD SPOKEN TO US TWO OR THREE TIMES BEFORE BUT I JUST WANTED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THAT HE MIGHT HAVE HEARD OR SEEN THAT MIGHT HELP IN THE INVESTIGATION.

GARY SAID HE COULDN'T THINK OF ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT HE HAD ALREADY TOLD US ABOUT AND WENT OVER SOME OF THE THINGS THAT HE HAD ALREADY TOLD US ABOUT AND CLEARED UP ONE MATTER TO ME THAT I ASKED ABOUT AND THAT WAS THE MATTER OF HIM NOT SELLING THE BUSINESS TO TED UNLESS HE MARRIED PATRICIA. GARY SAID THAT HE NEVER SAID THAT HE WOULDN'T SELL THE BUSINESS TO TED UNLESS HE MARRIED PATRICIA, BUT WHAT HE DID SAY WAS THAT HE WOULD NOT HAVE SOLD THE BUSINESS TO TED IF HE HAD NOT BEEN MARRIED TO PATRICIA. GARY SAID THAT THE FACT IS THAT TED WAS NOT OFFERED A CHANCE T0 BUY THE BUSINESS UNTIL AFTER HE AND PATRICIA WERE MARRIED.

GARY SAID THAT IF PATRICIA HAD NOT CALLED HIS HOME IN LONG BEACH THE WEEK BEFORE THAT HE WOULD NEVER BELIEVE TED WOULD BE A SUSPECT. HE SAID THAT WHEN PATRICIA CALLED THAT HE TOLD HIS WIFE THAT SHE WAS AFRAID OF TED AND SHE WAS CRYING AND TOLD HER THAT HE HAD TAKEN A LARGE INSURANCE POLICY ON HER. HE SAID PATRICIA WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THE SITUATION AND LET THEM KNOW AND THAT HE TOLD HER THAT HE WAS COMMING TO GREENSBORO THE FOLLOWING WEEK THAT HE WOULD MEET WITH HER AND TALK TO HER BUT SHE WAS KILLED ON MONDAY BEFORE THEY GOT UP HERE ON THURSDAY.

HE SAID THAT HE THOUGHT OF TED AS A SON, THAT HE HAD WORKED FOR HIM SINCE HE WAS FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. HE ALSO SAID THAT HE COULDN'T FOR THE SAKE OF HIM SEE WHY TED WOULD NOT COOPERATE WITH THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IN THE INVESTIGATION IN EVERY WAY SO IF HE IS NOT INVOLVED THAT HE COULD BE CLEARED.

I TOLD GARY THAT ACCORDING TO THE INVESTIGATION AT THIS POINT THAT TED WAS NOT THE PERSON THAT KILLED PATRICIA BECAUSE HE WAS AT LYLES WORKING AND LEFT THERE AND WENT TO PRECISION FABRIC TO A SECOND JOB. BUT THAT I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND IF HE DIDN'T HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF HER MURDER OR HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT WHY WOULDN'T HE COOPERATE WITH ME. GARY SAID THAT HE COULDN'T SEE WHY HE WOULD TALK TO ME EITHER. I EXPLAINED TO GARY THAT TED HAD SAID THAT WE WERE TRYING TO TWIST THINGS AROUND AND PIN THE MURDER ON HIM AND I ASKED GARY JUST HOW REDICULOUS THIS WAS. GARY AGREED SAYING THAT HE UNDERSTOOD AND THAT IF IT WERE HIM THAT HE WOULD DO ANYTHING WE ASKED TO CLEAR HIM FROM SUCH A CRIME.

GARY SAID THAT IF I WANTED HIM TO THAT HE WOULD GO BY AND SPEAK TO TED AND TELL HIM THAT HE SHOULD COME TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND SPEAK TO ME AND HELP CLEAR HIMSELF. I TOLD GARY THAT HE COULD IF HE CHOSE TO BUT THAT I WAS NOT ASKING HIM TO GO TELL TED ANYTHING. I FURTHER EXPLAINED TO GARY THAT TED FATHER RON AND HIS BROTHER RONNIE REFUSED TO COOPERATE AT THIS POINT. THIS REALLY SURPRISED ME, THAT THE FAMILY AS A WHOLE REFUSED TO COOPERATE.

GARY SAID THAT HE ATTENDED MONNETT ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH WHERE RON PASTORS. I EXPLAINED TO GARY THAT MONNETT ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS CRIME AND THAT I HOPED NO ONE WOULD SAY ANYTHING THAT WOULD CAUSE THE CHURCH ANY CONFLICTS. I FURTHER TOLD HIM THAT IF ANY OF THE KIMBLES HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH PATRICIAS MURDER THAT MONNETT ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE BECAUSE IN THAT CHURCH OR ANY CHURCH WHEN SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING AGAINST THE LAW THAT THE CHURCH IS NOT AT FAULT. GARY AGREED.

AS GARY WAS LEAVING HE SAID THAT HE ON HIS OWN WOULD GO BY AND SPEAK WITH TED AND TELL HIM THAT HE SHOULD COOPERATE WITH ME.
