Letter:  Steve Langham to John Hatfield, conflict of interest as fire expert

Re: Fire, Pleasant Garden, North Carolina

Dear Mr. Hatfield:

At your request, I met with Mike Ingold at your office on October 27, 1997. At that time I reviewed photographs of a fire scene and gave an opinion of burn time as requested. After returning to our Morehead City office and speaking with one of my investigators, John Pope, I realized that we had previously conducted a fire scene examination in October 1995. We were employed by the insurer of the property. At the time of my meeting with Mr. Ingold, I was not aware that an examination had been conducted by our company.

Upon review, I feel that the possibility of a conflict of interest may arise, therefore I feel that the proper course would be to discontinue activity at this point. I have enclosed our service bill. If you have any further questions feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Sincerely,
